Slovenia opens its largest solar power plant with energy storage

Slovenia has launched its largest solar power plant to date, additionally equipped with a 14 MWh energy storage system.

As reported by e-magazyny.pl, the largest solar power plant in Slovenia has gone into operation. The installation has been complemented by a 14 MWh energy storage system, which allows for better management of the energy produced and increases the flexibility of the entire system.

Photovoltaics and energy storage in a single project

Combining a large photovoltaic installation with energy storage is a solution that is gaining popularity across Europe. Storage makes it possible to retain surplus energy produced during the day and use it in the hours when the sun is not shining, which increases the real value of the energy generated from photovoltaics.

  • Energy storage makes it possible to better match production to demand.
  • Hybrid projects of this type reduce the need to curtail renewable energy (RES) production.
  • The delivery of large PV installations shows growing investor confidence in photovoltaics as a stable energy source.

The launch of such a large project in Slovenia is another example of how European countries – even smaller ones – are consistently increasing the share of solar energy in their energy mix. It is worth emphasising that the project was planned from the outset with energy storage in mind, which demonstrates the maturing approach of investors to building modern photovoltaic installations.

Investments of this kind also show that photovoltaics and energy storage are no longer treated as separate technologies, but are increasingly designed together, as a single, integrated energy system.

At NRG+ we develop projects combining photovoltaic farms with energy storage on leased land, which is why we are following with interest similar initiatives being delivered in other European countries.
